In the beginning Godus created the heavens and the earth

Godus, the new game from Peter Molyneux who was the designer behind Populous, has just been released into the wild on iOS. Here’s how he describes the game:

In Godus your hands will sculpt the mountains and carve rivers. Your touch will create pastures for your people. You will be loved by tiny worshippers that need your help to grow and your direction to progress through the ages of civilization. Power comes to you through influence, and your miracles guide the forces of nature. You must decide whether to use such awesome power for good or ill.

As you progress through the game you will find history hidden in the land through mysterious artefacts that uncover the true story behind your Followers. By journeying to far off lands to complete quests, you will bring back powerful abilities for your ever-gracious people. I’m fascinated to see how players wield such powers on mobile.

I can’t see any reviews for this version yet, but reviews from an earlier build (here and here) were not so great. Also, it is priced as ‘Free’ but there are in-app purchases for Gems, which probably means you’ll be grinding unless you pay to play. Buyer (downloader?) beware! In-app purchases for “free” games have come under a lot of scrutiny recently, with Apple being singled out as not doing enough to make clear how much free games may actually cost.

I’m too busy with Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag to devote any time to Godus, but if you do give it a try then let me know what you think.
